13 more J.C. Penney store closings revealed: Department store continues bankruptcy store closures
J.C. Penney has announced the locations of a further 13 branches that will be permanently closed in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, including seven in Michigan.
The department store chain expects to begin liquidation sales in stores on July 3 after a federal judge has given approval.
The final round of store closings adds 136 stores that have already started selling out. These locations were the first to be uncovered as part of a broader plan to permanently close 242 locations.
J.C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May after years of declining sales and two months of coronavirus pandemic disruption. The company hopes to use the process to reduce debt and stay in business. In mid-July there is a crucial deadline for drawing up a turnaround plan.
