2020 Business School Rankings: The Complete Collection

Rankings are big business. They attract attention and generate page views. Higher ranks turn deans into dignitaries and graduates into gurus. They make it easier for administrators to request more resources and alumni to dig deeper into their pockets.

Oh how about a pandemic?
The dominoes began to fall fast enough. In May, Bloomberg Businessweek decided to suspend its annual ranking instead of collecting responses to student surveys. The Economist faces a different challenge: Every American M7 MBA program boycotts its ranking. As a result, the ranking will be far less credible - the release date has already been postponed to 2021. The rankings for The Financial Times and US News & World Report are expected to be published in January and March, respectively. The problem is, no one is sure that top schools will avoid them too.
You can almost imagine the editors at Forbes, whose semi-annual ranking runs in odd years, toast their luck to avoid 2020.
You can't blame business schools for being careful with rankings in a pandemic. Rankings not only offer a direct comparison with colleagues, but also a view of historical performance. Business schools crave upward mobility, but are also comforted by brand consistency and consensus. In 2020 all bets are closed on both.
This is because the 2020 differences may reflect a variable that is not easy to manipulate: a school's ability to react and innovate in the face of disruption and uncertainty.
Still, there were many rankings that 2020 referred to. Last January, Harvard Business School replaced Stanford GSB as the best business school in the world, according to The Financial Times. Two months later, HBS was eliminated from the top 5 on US news. To make the injury worse, HBS wasn't even the best MBA program in Boston! This fall, P&Q unveiled its exclusive, data-driven rankings for online MBA and entrepreneurship programs that won Carnegie Mellon and Washington University top honors. This doesn't even apply to alumni and recruiter preferences, let alone survey results on test prep companies and academic concentrations.
Of course, there is P & Q's annual MBA ranking. This list, which is now in its eleventh year, combines the five best MBA rankings to make up for any inconsistencies and excesses. Are you wondering how your target schools have developed? Here are over 50 stories to give you an idea of where MBA programs are ... and where they're going.
