Toyota's surprisingly popular Nightshade appearance package has expanded to a hybrid model for the first time. It will be available for the front and all-wheel drive versions of the Prius from model year 2022.
Unlike the weed it gets its name from, the Nightshade doesn't cause sweating, stomach aches, or drowsiness. Instead, it adds black paint to the exterior trim pieces, wheels, and badges, though the Toyota logo in the grille retains its blue accents (so you don't forget the Prius is a hybrid). The headlights also get black inserts.
Buyers looking for the fully darkened look can order the Prius Nightshade in Midnight Black Metallic (picture). Toyota also offers Super White and Silver Metallic. Models with front-wheel drive run on 17-inch wheels, while variants with all-wheel drive are reduced to 15-inch alloy wheels. Black wheel nuts mount regardless of the drivetrain configuration.
Inside, the Nightshade package bundles black SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and black trim on the center console. There's also a JBL six-speaker sound system to play your favorite Black Flag songs and a wireless charger to keep your Blackberry running at 100%. If you want real blackberries or are looking for the best black Angus in town, the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibilities can help.
Toyota stores across the country will receive the Prius Nightshade Edition for the 2022 model year; Keep that in mind the next time you're trying to find an Uber after dark. Price information was not disclosed. If you like the Nightshade treatment but aren't a fan of the Prius, you're in luck. It's the eleventh member of the Toyota line-up (after the Corolla, Avalon, and several trucks and SUVs) to receive it, and our crystal ball tells us it won't be the last.
