2023 Honda Civic Type R will be most powerful Honda ever sold in the U.S.

The supercar formula was to brush up a discontinued model with more power and better handling with runout trims, and then pick up the next-gen model where this special edition left off. It will be the same with the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. The automaker has finally announced that the racy coupe will be unveiled on July 20 at 10 p.m. for the east coasts, 7 p.m. for the west coast. Until then, we'll have to nibble on this front aspect teasing, which is just the potatoes hiding the meat. What we'll be chewing on until the 20th is Honda's line that we're about to get "the most powerful production Honda-branded vehicle ever offered in the United States."

The basis was the 2021 Civic Type R Limited, which we called "an instant classic". It made 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Yes, that's the same performance as the standard Civic Type R. The Limited got more out of its 2.0-litre turbocharged four by shedding around 50 pounds, using revised software for the adaptive dampers and in the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup was shod 2 rubber. The diet and recoding helped, of course, but Bibendum's added grip on the Continental SportContact 6 tires on the standard Type R made the real difference, cutting lap times. After losing the record for front-wheel drive production cars to the Renault Megane at the Nürburgring, Honda wasn't shy about reporting how much testing the Type R Limited had undergone at the Ring. But for reasons only known to Honda, the automaker has never released a lap time.
The 2023 Type R isn't out yet, and Honda is already talking about beating the previous-generation lap record at Suzuka by 0.873 seconds. The question now is how much extra horsepower and what kind of tires made it possible. Of course, we'll also be wondering if the new Type R comes closer to the $39,500 MSRP of the last Type R or the $46,000 of the Type R Limited. Let the guessing begin.
