A ‘minor accident’ on a Florida road escalated. Now a pregnant librarian is dead, cops say
A street rage case in central Florida killed one of the drivers, an expectant mother, last Saturday night.
According to Orange City Police, the incident started around 5 p.m. November 20th when Sara Nicole Morales, 35, came across Andrew Derr's motorcycle in her blue Kia. It's unclear why she hit his bike.
Although Derr was not injured or expelled in the "minor accident," he said he followed Morales to obtain her information for law enforcement after she drove away from the scene, according to investigators.
Derr, along with two witnesses, tried verbally to stop Morales at the intersection while she turned left, but she refused, according to a press release on social media.
Morales drove to her house and went inside. Derr and the witnesses followed her. They stopped in the lane in front of their house and called the 911, say the investigators. Morales reappeared a short time later with a gun and pointed it at her, the Post continues.
Derr, who has a valid concealed weapon license in Florida, drew his concealed pistol and fired, hitting Morales "several times".
The motorcyclist stayed where Orange City Fire Rescue intervened for medical care. Morales was taken to a local hospital where she died of her injuries.
The woman, a librarian in the Volusia district, was reportedly four to five months pregnant, leaving behind an 11-year-old daughter and a fiancé.
No one had been charged in the case as of Wednesday, although police say the investigation is ongoing.
In a newly published bodycam video, Derr can be seen on the ground.
“This girl tried to kill me,” he says. “She pointed a gun at me. I am sorry."
