On Friday afternoon this week, Missouri Republican Congressman Jason Smith sent a letter to the United States Ambassador asking for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to be revoked of their royal titles after they spoke about the upcoming presidential election in a recent interview had.
Smith's letter was received by the Daily Mail, in which he argued that although they have resigned as working royals and are now officially private individuals, they should still be viewed as representatives of the British family and adhered to the same rules about political neutrality as the rest of the company.
Smith argued that Harry and Meghan's public comments on politics were an "attempt to interfere in our election," and requested that his concerns be passed on to the Queen herself.
Now that they have resigned as working royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are allowed to do things they couldn't have done before - like talking publicly about politics. However, there are still some people who don't seem to believe that this should be the case.
Missouri Republican Congressman Jason Smith is one of those people, and is actively campaigning for the Sussexes to officially lose all of their royal titles. Although Harry and Meghan no longer use their HRH titles after stepping down from their royal lives, they still have titles. Harry is still Prince Harry and the couple are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Smith seems to want to change that.
The Daily Mail received a copy of a letter Smith wrote to Karen Pierce, the British ambassador to the United States, on Friday afternoon. In it he wrote:
"As you know, the British royal family has long had a policy of strict neutrality in political matters. I am therefore concerned about the recent comments made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the US presidential election, particularly in light of international talks on foreign ones Meddling in our elections and the Duke's status as a guest of the United States. "
Referring to Harry and Meghan's Time 100 interview in which they urged American fans to vote in the upcoming presidential election, Smith described the couple's behavior as "a serious violation of the British royal family's policy of political neutrality and an inappropriate act domestic interference by either of the two. " our closest allies. "
Smith rejects the idea that Harry and Meghan are actually exempt from these rules as long as they have their royal tiles, arguing that the Sussexes making political comments are some form of meddling in a US election.
"I believe that the titles and privileges which they retain with the permission of Her Majesty the Queen with the advice and consent of her Government prevent the Duke and Duchess from making comments in personal capacity of their official position within the British Royal separate family.
"By allowing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to retain their titles and continue making these political comments, the British government is effectively condoning the interference of top-level officials in the UK establishment in the United States' 2020 presidential election."
Smith ended his letter by formally urging the British ambassador to bring his concerns to the Queen herself, asking her to strip Harry and Meghan of all of their titles - or to get them to stop talking to their fans about politics.
"I respectfully ask the British Government to ensure that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer seek to interfere in our election or lose all of the titles, styles and privileges they currently retain. I respectfully ask you to raise these concerns to convey to both Her Majesty and Her Majesty the Queen and Her Majesty's Government. "
In her Time 100 interview, Meghan discussed the importance of the upcoming election but did not stand up for any particular party or candidate, saying, "Now we're only six weeks from election day and today is National Voter Registration Day. Everyone For four years we are told the same thing: This is the most important choice of our life. But this is it. When we vote, our values are put into action, our voices are heard. Your voice reminds you that matter because you do it and deserve it to be heard. "
For his part, Harry drew attention to his inability to vote all his life and encouraged those who can choose to use their voice in November.
"I won't be able to vote in this election here in the US," said Harry. "But many of you may not know that I have not been able to vote in the UK all my life. As we approach this November, it is important that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity."
