A 'Rust' script supervisor said in a 911 call that the assistant director was 'supposed to check the guns'
The fatal shooting of a crew member by actor Alec Baldwin while filming a film in the western United States has raised questions about the use of guns on film sets.
A script supervisor for "Rust" made the assistant director responsible for the shooting on an emergency call.
Mamie Mitchell said the assistant director was "responsible" for the filming, which resulted in a death.
"He's supposed to check the guns," Mitchell said over the audio of the call.
The Sante Fe Sheriff's Office released the audio of the 911 call Thursday between the dispatch and the script director for the film "Rust," in which a prop gun fired by actor Alec Baldwin killed the film's cameraman.
"We need help," said Mamie Mitchell, according to the published 911. "Our director and our camerawoman were shot."
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died after actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun loaded with a "live round" while filming at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico on Thursday. Director Joel Souza was injured.
Mitchell can be heard on the sound, blaming the film's assistant director.
"That damn AD who yelled at me over lunch asking for revisions, that motherfucker," Mitchell says, seeming to be talking to someone who wasn't on the phone. "He's supposed to check the guns. He's responsible for what happened."
"I sat, we rehearsed and it went off," Mitchell told the operator. "And I ran out."
An assistant director on the film handed the gun to Baldwin and told him it was safe right before the fatal shooting Thursday.
"Cold gun," said the deputy director, according to the Associated Press, quoting a file.
Later on on the 911 call, an unfamiliar male voice answered the call and interacted with the operator, who asked him for details and the extent of the injuries.
"Is the bleeding controlled?" the operator asked the male voice.
"No," he said after a short pause.
Hollywood producers who have worked with Hutchins in the past paid tribute to her in emotional messages.
Actor Joe Manganiello, for example, called her a "fantastic person" who was good at handling pressure. Manganiello and Hutchins recently worked on the film "Archenemy".
"I woke up to the news and read the news and I was shocked," said Manganiello. “I was so lucky to have @halynahutchins as my DP on 'Archenemy'. She was an absolutely incredible talent and a great person. She had such an eye and visual style, she was the kind of camerawoman you wanted to see successful because you wanted to see what she could do next. "
A fundraiser for Hutchins has raised nearly $ 100,000 to date on GoFundMe.
