A viral TikTok that appeared to expose a fraudulent friend was joking in an effort to "bring in likes," the video creator said Tuesday.
The user, whose first name is Megan-Marie, posted the original TikTok on Saturday, July 24th, in which her boyfriend claimed he "watched the Olympics with the boys" when in fact he was with another girl .
The video featured a picture allegedly sent by the "friend" showing the Olympics on the television screen. But then the TikTok zooms in on various clues suggesting he was with a girl and reveals that the room contained a bouquet of flowers, a book on Chanel, and a woman's knee reflected in the closet.
The caption read: "Did I write stupidly on my forehead?"

Accompanied by hashtags like #ClearGenius and #Cheater, the TikTok garnered 4.5 million views and over 800,000 likes. The user later posted follow-ups to "pull out the streak" - with a TikTok posted two days later that revealed that the photo the "friend" had sent was actually a live photo. When activated, a woman's voice could be heard in the background.
But in a Pool Storytime published Tuesday, Megan-Marie said she met the man in question on hinge and that they were not in an exclusive relationship.
Megan-Marie said the text exchange and picture were real, but that she later learned that the girl was just his best friend. "It's not a piece of trash, as everyone says. It's just funny. I'm glad that this could give you all a little joy and distract you from your everyday life," she said.

As she pondered her conversation with the hinge man, Megan-Marie said she realized the exchange had the potential to go viral.
"I know what's going to explode on TikTok because I'm on TikTok and I know what things are going to blow up," she said. "At first I wanted to drag out the series, bring in likes and followers, but that's just not authentic to the story."
