The U.S. women's national team took bronze at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, beating a respectable Australian team, leaving the Matildas without a podium.
After the final whistle was blown to close the 4-3 thriller, many of the devastated Aussies stayed on the field to mourn their loss. Superstar striker and Matildas captain Sam Kerr, who became Australia's top scorer of all time with an equalizer in the 17th minute, was among the most dejected on the pitch.

Fortunately, someone was willing to offer her a shoulder to cry on - but, somewhat unusually, she wore different colors.
USWNT midfielder Kristie Mewis set out to comfort Kerr after following her team's heartbreaker. Fans already suspected the two international soccer stars were dating each other through their social media interactions, and photos from Thursday's bronze medal game provide further evidence that Mewis and Kerr may be one of the sport's newest power couples.

The 30-year-old Mewis only recently made it back to the national team after a six-year break. If the Games had taken place in 2020, she probably wouldn't have been in the running for a spot on the list. But with three USWNT goals and an assist en route to the final stretch before the Olympics, it seemed like the Houston Dash star was cracking her ticket to Tokyo.
Kerr's appearance at the Games was never questioned. The 27-year-old has long been regarded as one of the world's best football players and insiders, who finished fourth in the 2020 list of the 50 best stars in the world. A deadly attacker, Kerr has become the top scorer of all time in both her home country's W-League and the American National Women's Soccer League.
Since then, she has faced a new challenge in the English FA Women's Super League, where she scored 21 goals in 22 games for Chelsea.

The couple exchanged lots of flirtatious messages on each other's Instagram comments. At the start of the Olympics, Mewis wrote on a photo of Kerr and some Matildas teammates holding up peace signs, "Glad to see you commit to your new number." Kerr replied, "You commit more than 2 [sic]".
Despite Mewis and Kerr's more public promotion, it was unclear whether their comments were joking. Neither of the two has officially confirmed the status of their relationship, although both have had public relations with club colleagues in the past.

Women's soccer fans were overwhelmingly supportive after seeing photos of the alleged couple interacting in person. Many used Twitter to express their enthusiasm - and made a few jokes at the expense of those who thought they were just friends:
