Wayne County, where Palmer chairs the recruiter, is Michigan's largest city: Detroit. After unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud by President Donald Trump and other Republicans after President-elect Joe Biden won the county, Palmer initially declined to endorse Wayne County's vote. She eventually resigned and certified it later that day.
According to a complaint filed on December 22nd by FBI special agent Emily Munchiando, Katelyn Jones, a 23-year-old former Michigan resident, sent the following to Palmer:
"Damn it, it wasn't hard to find all of your information, which makes the racist slut [victim's name], [victim's address] disgusting."
"I don't tolerate people like you, in fact I consider you a terrorist and you know what happens to terrorists [victim's first name] ???
After the two messages, prosecutors say Jones sent two photos of the bloody, mutilated body of a naked woman, followed by, "I want you to imagine this is the little [name of victim's daughter] of your beautiful daughter. "
The federal court files leave the victim's name anonymous, but at a November meeting of the Wayne County Board of Canvasser, Monica Palmer said she received "text messages with graphic photos of naked, dead women. And then a photo of my daughter who was me let. " I know this will happen to my daughter. "Court records are in line with Palmer's November commentary and confirm the identity of the electoral officer in question.
"The allegations in this case should make us all disgusted," said United States attorney Matthew Schneider. "There is simply nowhere in Michigan or in the US where people who just do what they think are right can deter such threats."
In addition to the text messages, Jones of the DOJ reportedly set up an Instagram account in which she added more threats in the comments on Palmer's Instagram, as well as Palmer's address, phone number and phone number of her husband.
"Because of the potentially broad scope of the investigation, we have asked the F.B.I. for assistance in this case," said John Kosanke, director of the Grosse Pointe Woods Police Department. "The combined efforts of the FBI and our investigative team, led by Detective Ryan Schroerlucke, have brought federal criminal charges. I would like to thank the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in this investigation."
When she was arrested, the DOJ said Jones waived her rights and agreed to answer questions about her behavior. The DOJ admitted sending the threatening text messages and Instagram comments. If convicted, Jones faces no more than 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $ 250,000.
Jones was later released under certain conditions and will appear before the Eastern District Court in Michigan on January 13, 2021.
