Weddings are known to be a day of love and celebration, but they can also bring out the absolute worst in people. Take it from a woman on Reddit who refused to shed her body hair to attend her uncle's wedding and her mom had a fit.
"She got me 2 dresses even though I didn't want them," the Reddit poster wrote. "She told me I had to put on makeup. Make-up itches and makes me uncomfortable. So I asked her not to put my makeup on and she said ok. But now she's telling me I need to get rid of my body hair. She said I can either let it grow (a lady comes to our house to prep all the female family members) or I can just shave it.”

The user added that she hated the obsession with getting rid of hair and found waxing incredibly painful. Her first memory was when she was 12 and she had to stop halfway through because it hurt so much.
"I don't think smooth skin without hair is worth the inconvenience. I've never really hated my body hair."

"I told my mom I didn't want to get rid of my body hair. She said that everyone would judge me and say that I look like a man. I told her to mind their own business.”

Oops! The two got into a heated argument which eventually led the OP to tell her mother that she never wanted to leave in the first place.
"She knows I really hate any kind of social gathering, and she knows I hate makeup, and she knows I hate getting rid of body hair, but she keeps asking me to do those things, and gets upset if I disagree," she wrote.
The two eventually got to a meeting place and the mother told the OP "okay fine" but not without making the OP feel absolutely awful about the whole interaction and wondering if she was a TA. But users quickly jumped in, offering her the support and validation she rightly deserved.
One person responded with: "It's really sad that body hair on women is still considered this taboo and embarrassing when it's completely natural. It's your body, don't let anyone pressure you into doing anything you're not comfortable with. I'm impressed that you are so happy and confident in your natural body and don't feel the need to shave/wax for the benefit of others.”

While others offered words of sympathy and advice on how to cover her body hair so she could continue attending family events and keeping the peace. Some suggested tights to cover their legs, while others suggested a long-sleeved dress or blazer to cover their arms.
But some were quick to offer an alternative perspective, suggesting the OP's mother was only looking out for her daughter's best interests and didn't want her to be judged or abused at a family event. But whatever, it's ultimately up to the OP to decide what to do with her body and her own body hair. And thankfully, Redditors overwhelmingly had their backs.
"If I were your mom I would be proud that you wouldn't compromise yourself to please others," added one user. "Because with that confidence, those people and those things don't even matter."
