Air Force aircraft land on Michigan highway

The Michigan Air National Guard completed a historic training exercise Thursday by landing and "generating" or taking off six Air Force aircraft on a partially closed state highway in Michigan.
Four A-10 Thunderbolts and two C-146 transport planes, commanded by three separate units, including the Michigan Air National Guard, ended their operations by dropping the planes off on State Highway M-32 in northeast Michigan's Alpena County.
The operation was part of the annual Exercise Northern Strike training event held at the National All-Domain Warfighting Center in Lansing, according to a press release from the Michigan National Guard.

The mission was attended by the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard's Selfridge Air National Guard Base, the 355th Wing of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, and the Air Force Special Operations Command based in Duke Field, Florida part.
AIR FORCE TO COMPLY WITH USING BODY CAMERAS
"It is believed that this will be the first time in history that modern Air Force aircraft have deliberately landed on a civilian road on US soil," said Air Force Col. James Rossi, who directs the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center , a subdivision of the Warfighting Center. "Our efforts are focused on our ability to train the war fighters in every setting on the continuum so that our nation can compete, deter, and win today and tomorrow."

The exercise was part of the Air Force's agile combat employment strategy and demonstrated "the Air Force's ability to be deployed quickly from anywhere, anytime," according to the Michigan National Guard news release.
"We did it! We made history!" Wrote the 127th Wing of the Michigan National Guard on Facebook.
