Alex Smith continues to help Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes years after exit from Kansas City

In one of his first feature interviews since joining ESPN as an NFL analyst, former Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith made his way back to the City of Fountains to speak to Patrick Mahomes ahead of his week 1 match against Cleveland . They talked about their 2017 year together, when Smith was known to mentor Mahomes before he was traded to Washington to make way for the future MVP. However, it appears that their most recent engagement stretched beyond their on-camera time.
Smith told his ESPN colleagues that he and Mahomes returned after their interview to re-watch last year's division playoff game against the Browns in preparation for the home opener.
"It was really interesting," said Smith of the experience. "Patrick definitely had an advantage for him and I think the whole team has him."
Having little doubt where that advantage came from, he continued his comments from his time at Mahomes, emphasizing how hungry the team are to avenge their February loss to the Buccaneers.
"I think they are embarrassed to lose the Super Bowl," he said. "They heard everything out of season and the main point is that they are determined to show that they have grown from it."
Perhaps no analyst in this situation has ever had better insight into a team and a quarterback than Smith. Although the Chiefs' era of league-wide dominance began a few years after his swap, Smith has always shown a weakness for his understudy in Kansas City.
Some of the moments that will shape Smith's long-term career took place way out of the sight of cameras and video crews, helping Mahomes digest his first year in film as a rookie. While times have certainly changed in Paris on the Plains, Smith's commitment to thriving Mahomes and Kansas City in general has been unwavering. He still helps the Chiefs win on Sundays, just in a very special way.
