All of the Barbies in Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Movie Got Together for a Sleepover Before Filming

Details of the plot of Margot Robbie's Barbie movie have been under wraps, but rumors have been circulating for months that the film will feature multiple actors as different iterations of Barbie and Ken. This rumor was apparently corroborated by Sex Education breakout and Death on the Nile star Emma Mackey, who told Empire magazine that all of the Barbies who starred in Barbie were at the start of filming had stayed. Mackey was in attendance, so it seems likely she's also playing Barbie in the film.
"Right from the start we had a sleepover for the Barbies where we played games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]," Mackey said. "I don't usually play games because I get so competitive and angry. But Scott and I were the best.”

In addition to Robbie in "Barbie" as various iterations of Barbie, Mackey, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp and Hari Nef, among others, are said to be among the cast. Ryan Gosling plays Ken in the film, but actors like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings breakout Simu Liu are rumored to be playing Ken as well. Given that Evans and Gatwa were at the Barbie sleepover, who knows what else writer-director Greta Gerwig has planned for her cast.
"She's everything I could have dreamed of," Mackey told Empire magazine of working with Gerwig. “She's so dedicated and precise and so childishly passionate about what she's doing. Scorsese said, "Never lose the amateur in you." I see Greta laughing behind her monitor, and she's going to reference something very niche, and it's going to make perfect sense in that moment. Your mind is bubbling all the time. I love being around people like that.”

Mackey went on to describe "Barbie" as "light and fun and goofy and American and pink." Co-star Simu Liu said earlier this year the film was "wild" and "incredibly unique". He also echoed Mackey's praise for Gerwig's behavior on set.
"If you do a scene and it works, you'll hear, 'HAHAHAHA!' That's the best feeling in the world," Liu said. "If you're an asshole on a Greta Gerwig set, there's no hope for you."
Barbie opens in Warner Bros. cinemas on July 21, 2023.
