America's oldest collegiate debate society has voted to deprive Senator Ted Cruz of his highest honor, according to The Daily Princetonian.
Princeton University's American Whig-Cliosphic Society has filed a motion to repeal the James Madison Award for Distinguish Public Service, which was presented to Cruz in 2016, the newspaper reported.
Society members proposed the motion because Cruz was unhappy with the support for unsubstantiated electoral fraud claims in the 2020 election and the January 6th Capitol attack.
The award, which was introduced in 1960, is given to individuals who "have taken up the arduous but righteous cause of dedicating their lives to the betterment of society," according to the company's website.
This marks the first time in the history of the society that members have voted to remove this award, The Daily Princetonian said.
After a 90-minute debate, 37 people voted to resign, 32 voted against, and five people abstained from the newspaper, the newspaper reported.
Cruz graduated from Princeton in 1992 and was considered a brilliant speaker in his youth.
The company's board of directors will now make a decision by the trustees on whether to officially revoke the award, according to The Daily Princetonian. They are expected to agree.
Cruz's approval rating has dropped in the past few weeks. An out of date trip to Cancun while his home state of Texas was experiencing a catastrophic winter storm cost him in the polls.
According to a survey by Morning Consult of over 2,000 registered voters, his approval rating fell from +6 to -5 between February 18 and 28.
Cruz's reputation is also tarnished by his refusal to accept the 2020 presidential election result.
The Senator led the Senate's GOP efforts to oppose President Joe Biden's confirmation of victory. Several lawmakers urged Cruz to resign after a pro-Trump mob forcibly stormed the Capitol just minutes after he delivered a speech in the Senate.
