An elementary school teacher in Newberg, Oregon appeared at school in Blackface last week, claiming to be portraying Rosa Parks to protest a COVID-19 vaccine mandate, according to the Newberg Graphic.
The state of Oregon issued a vaccination mandate for K-12 teachers in August, stating that they must be fully vaccinated by October 18.
According to Newberg Graphic, the teacher worked at Mabel Rush Elementary School, part of the Newberg School District.
The Newberg School District released a statement Monday saying the district takes all incidents of racism seriously. The district said the teacher was put on administrative leave, although it is unclear from the district's statement whether the teacher will be paid while on vacation.
“Last Friday, one of our employees reported to work in blackface. The employee has been removed from the site and the HR department has put the employee on administrative leave, ”the statement said. "The Newberg Public Schools administration condemns all expressions of racism."
"The employee has been removed from the site and the human resources department has put the employee on administrative leave," the statement said. "The Newberg Public Schools administration condemns all acts of racism."
The blackface incident is part of a pattern of racist incidents in the school district.
Just last week, a group of parents informed the school district of a group chat where several students called the "slave trade" were jokingly bidding money on their black classmates, demanding their deaths and asking for "another holocaust."
The news of the slave trade came hours before the Newberg School Board approved a new ban on "controversial political symbols" in their schools, including Black Lives Matter and LGBT Pride flags.
