Apple Closes All 53 California Stores And A Dozen More Elsewhere As COVID-19 Surges
Apple is temporarily closing all 53 of its California stores and at least a dozen more in other parts of the country as COVID-19 cases continue to rise.
The shutdowns will take place just a few days before Christmas, one of the busiest shopping times of the year.
"Due to the current COVID-19 conditions in some of the communities in which we operate, we are temporarily closing stores in these areas," Apple said in a statement from Bloomberg on Saturday. "We are taking this step with great caution as we are closely monitoring the situation and look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible."
A message from Apple on the websites of its California stores warned customers that the stores would "soon be temporarily closed". However, they will remain open until Tuesday for the collection of existing online orders, the planned Genius support in the store and for previously reserved individual purchases.
California has become the nation's COVID-19 hotspot in the past few weeks, with 1.8 million cases and more than 22,000 deaths. Average daily cases are more than 40,000.
Apple is also closing stores in Tennessee, Utah, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Alaska and New Mexico, USA Today. In addition, branches were closed in Mexico, Brazil and London, where strict coronavirus restrictions were put in place in the event of a dangerous new variant of the COVID-19 surge.
