Ariana Grande’s Time As A Nickelodeon Child Star Has Come Under Scrutiny After A “Disturbing” Video Of Her Being “Sexualized And Infantilized” Resurfaced Online

Last week, former Nickelodeon child star Jennette MCcurdy released her memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died.
The autobiography details Jennette's difficult childhood and complicated relationship with her mother, Debra McCurdy, who died in 2013. She also reflected on her acting career, making shocking allegations about her time on set.
Jennette starred as Sam Puckett on iCarly between 2007 and 2012 and joined the show at the age of 15. In 2013, Jennette reprized her role for a new teen sitcom called Sam & Cat, which was a spin-off of iCarly and another Nickelodeon show, Victorious.
Ariana Grande starred as Cat Valentine in both Victorious and Sam & Cat, and all three series were created by Dan Schneider.
In her memoir, Jennette recounted disturbing experiences with an unnamed person she dubbed "The Creator," widely believed to be referring to Dan.
She claimed The Creator provided her with alcohol to loosen her up, even though she was under the legal drinking age in the United States at the time.
Jennette also said she felt sexualized during her time at iCarly and was photographed wearing a bikini during a wardrobe fitting. The creator also reportedly forced Jennette to reshoot her first on-screen kiss — which was also her first kiss ever — seven times, though she was visibly uncomfortable.
The actor said she was "afraid of being seen as a sexual being" and recalled feeling uncomfortable when The Creator gave her a shoulder massage against her will.
Adding to her troubling experiences with The Creator, Jennette has had a strained relationship with her co-star Ariana.
When Sam & Cat was canceled after just a year, it was widely speculated that it was because Jennette was angry after learning Ariana was being paid more than she was.
Jennette denied this in her memoir, but admitted to feeling frustrated with the adjustments made while filming Ariana's then-thriving music career.
While Jennette was apparently forced to turn down film projects because the writers would refuse to write them out of episodes, they extended the courtesy to Ariana.
Jennette said her anger came to a head when she found out Ariana's character would be locked in a box for an entire episode to explain the star's absence from the show.
She also admitted that on a personal level she was "jealous" of Ariana because the singer had an idyllic upbringing in a loving and wealthy family — a stark contrast to Jennette's own experience.
And Jennette was apparently led to believe her character would be the focus of the spin-off show, so she was frustrated when Ariana's cat was added to the mix.
When Jennette left Nickelodeon for good, she claims she was offered $300,000 in "hush money" to keep her from speaking publicly about her experiences on the network, but she turned it down.
While many people were appalled by Jennette's memories and sympathized with the way she was treated, it has now been claimed that Ariana was also a "victim" during her time as a child actress.
In light of Jennette's allegations, a fan compiled a compilation of Ariana's "disturbing" and "disgusting" scenes as Cat Valentine and shared the video in a tweet that has since gone viral.
When the first season of Victorious aired in 2010, Nickelodeon also launched a website called The Slap that provided viewers with exclusive videos of the characters off the show.
One category of videos was called Cat's Random Thoughts, which focused on Ariana's character in a series of selfies. All eight mini-episodes were written and directed by Dan.
In the compilation, Ariana - who was only 16 at the time - is seen in a series of lewd and compromising situations, including putting a finger in her mouth, sucking her own toe and trying to "juice a potato". while moaning.
At one point, Ariana screams, "I'm soaking wet," and in another video, she lies face down on a bed and pours water all over her face and chest.
"Everyone keeps bringing Ariana Grande up against Jennette for Stan drama and knows why. Let's not forget, Ariana is a victim of Dan Schneider's creepiness herself. That's why she doesn't talk about the role of Cat Valentine anymore. They sexualized and infantilized them," the original poster tweeted alongside the video.

They followed with a scene from Victorious in which Ariana's character was surrounded by men shooting at her with water pistols while she was wearing only a bikini top and hot pants, and another from The Slap in which Ariana's teenage costar Victoria Justice bare her Feet covered with ketchup.
Remember that episode of Victory where they were all locked in that RV? Those scenes with the cat also all felt very awkward.

While Ariana doesn't often talk about her time on Victorious or Sam & Cat, she attended Victorious' 10th anniversary celebration in 2020 and has never spoken out against Dan.
Meanwhile, Dan left Nickelodeon in 2018, and three years later the New York Times reported that the network cut ties with him after an internal investigation found evidence of verbal abuse towards his colleagues.
In an interview with the same publication, Dan addressed the claims that he had "sexualized" the child actors on his shows, saying the claims were "ridiculous" and insisting that "the comedy was completely innocent."
"I wouldn't have the long-standing friendships and enduring loyalty of so many respected people if I had abused my actors of all ages, especially minors," Dan concluded at the time.
BuzzFeed News has reached out to Nickelodeon for comment.
