Atletico Madrid rejected €150m offer for Joao Felix from Premier League club
Atletico Madrid declined an offer of 150 million euros for striker Joao Felix from a Premier League club earlier this season, sources close to the league goal said.
The 20-year-old Portuguese striker moved from Benfica to the league last summer, although this didn't stop an intermediary from acting on behalf of an English team that turned to Atletico for a transfer before the coronavirus pandemic.
The offer, which came from a nameless club and should have moved Felix this summer, was considered serious, although it was immediately rejected by Atleti.
Felix is highly regarded at the Wanda Metropolitano. The club spent € 126 million for € 122 million to sign Benfica before Antoine Griezmann joined La Liga rival Barcelona last year.
With eight goals and three assists in 29 games this season between ankle ankle injuries, he has not quite reached this immense price.
However, when he made his first appearance after resuming La Liga after the Coronavirus was blocked - a 5-0 away win against Osasuna - he scored two goals and is considered a potential star of the future.
Atletico has managed to sign Felix before the interests of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Juventus and others, and is not interested in parting with a valuable asset so quickly.
It remains to be seen whether leading clubs can afford transfers of this size in the foreseeable future. The Covid-19 pandemic had a serious impact on club finances, as matchday earnings were lost as teams are forced to play closed doors behind.
Felix's stunning first campaign for Atletico has led some to conclude that he would have been better off with another leading European team. Compatriot Carlos Carvalhal said the Portuguese international should have joined city rival Real.
Primeira Liga head coach Rio Ave said: "Joao Felix is a great player and I don't want to create controversy with my statements. He is a player with incredible technical skills but I'm not sure how Atletico plays." is the best for him.
"That was my doubt when he signed for her. Diego Simeone is a great coach, his teams are very strong, very competitive, but Joao Felix doesn't seem to be the perfect player to be there."
"In another situation we would see a great Joao Felix. It will be a little difficult and it will take more time. He has to transform as a player."
"If he had gone to a team like Real Madrid, he would be at a higher level. The context would be more favorable for him."
"It is not a criticism of Simeone, there is no doubt about what he has achieved. The work speaks for itself, I only think that this marriage is not the best."
