Avalanches kill 10 in mountainous area near Iran’s capital
Tehran, Iran (AP) - A series of avalanches in Iran killed 10 people in a mountain area north of the capital, state television reported on Sunday.
According to the report, rescue teams looked for a number of missing people after the avalanches hit four different areas. State television broadcast recordings of emergency services using a helicopter to search for missing and injured persons.
The incidents occurred on Friday after strong winds and snowfalls a day earlier. The Alborz Mountains, where the avalanches occurred, are popular for hiking and climbing on weekends.
Deadly avalanches are a rare phenomenon in Iran. In 2017, two avalanches killed 11 hikers.
