Smith was fatally shot in an attempted arrest in Mississippi and, despite "the best efforts of the medical staff, the child died as a result of the injuries," said Biloxi Police Major Christopher De Back.
The deadly chain of events began Monday in Baker, Louisiana, when Smith allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, 32-year-old Christin Parker, and her 26-year-old nephew Brandon Parker around 11:30 a.m. CDT at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's office .
Smith then fled east with the child who had lived in a blue Nissan Altima with his mother Parker, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
Biloxi police learned that Smith had driven into Mississippi on Interstate 10, and at mile marker 40, De Back said the suspect drove into the grass median around 3:00 p.m. and got stuck.
"When the suspect got out of the vehicle, shots were fired. The suspect received medical attention but died as a result of injuries," added De Back. "The youth was injured and taken to a local medical facility for treatment."
