Back to the Present? A Car Designer Just Gave the DeLorean DMC-12 a Modern Makeover

It has long been rumored and reported that the legendary DeLorean DMC-12 would get a restart, but the lofty plans never came to fruition. Now a Spanish car designer has taken matters into their own hands and created a next generation DeLorean concept suitable for 21st century drivers.
Ángel Guerra's futuristic take on the retro ride coincides with the DMC-12's 40th anniversary, which will take place in 2021. It pays homage to the vehicle's incredible legacy, which began with the Back to the Future series in the late 1980s.
The angular four-wheeler, which was manufactured for the American market from 1981 to 1983, was the true breakout star in Robert Zemecki's beloved science fiction trilogy. It became a firm favorite of auto enthusiasts, cinephiles and, apparently, a 38-year-old Spaniard.
"Since that car rolled down the truck ramp in Back to the Future, I knew I was going to be a car designer," he told Retrogeist.
Guerra, who previously worked for various brands such as Rimac Automobili, completed the project in just two weeks in his spare time. He said he tried to take the design language of Giorgetto Giugiaro's sports car time machine and blend it with German Bauhaus conventions for an overall minimalist feel. It retained the low profile and slim stainless steel body of the original, along with the typical double doors and low profile.
There are a few notable variations, however. The new model has bigger wheels, a wider body, smoother, curvier lines, and exudes an attitude resembling a millionaire Bugatti or Pagani. Guerra also replaced the double square headlights and taillight setup with a continuous LED strip that runs around the car.
While the project is not affiliated with either the DeLorean Motor Company or the Back to the Future franchise, it is a fitting tribute to one of the most famous collector's cars in pop culture history.
Guerra said he'd love to take on the Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari F40 next. Stay tuned.
