"When my daughter asked to change her name to Elliott, I didn't know at first if it was a transgender thing, which it isn't, but it's a personal choice," McLean said. "It's her body, it's her name, it's her everything."
Elliott's name change was first announced by her mother in a back-to-school post on Instagram last month.
"She's still Ava. She will always be Ava to me," McLean told People. "But at the same time, whatever it is, that's hers, and I'll support it a million percent, my wife will (also) do it."
McLean added that Elliott first chose her new name over a year ago, according to People.

He recalled his daughter saying, "Dad, I just feel like my name isn't that unique and it's not that original, and there's a lot of Avas in dancing and a lot of Avas in school."
In her Instagram Story, McLean's wife Rochelle addressed questions about Elliott's name change, People previously reported.
"Not that it's anyone's business, but Elliott's name change isn't a matter of gender," Rochelle wrote, noting that her daughter had wanted to change her name for a long time and that Elliott's name "got stuck."
