Bairstow and Warner 160-run stand leads Hyderabad to big win
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - A 160-run opening stand between Jonny Bairstow and captain David Warner helped Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab beat Kings XI Punjab by 69 runs in the Indian Premier League on Thursday.
Bairstow, 97, and Warner, 52, were over in the same 16th. Hyderabad faded in the end but hit 201-6, overtaking 200 for the first time this season.
Kings XI's response never really started, only Nicholas Pooran fought with a 37-ball 77 but no one was able to stay with him. They were all out in 17th for 132 and lost a fourth time in a row.
Hyderabad managed its first game without the injured spearhead bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar with serenity and ended his win-loss record 3: 3.
Bairstow was dropped on the 19th. He looted two sixes from Ravi Bishnoi's first over, two sixes from Glenn Maxwell, and two more sixes from Mujeeb Ur Rahman on the 14th, bringing up his and Warner's second 150-run stand in the IPL, both against Kings XI.
Bairstow's third fifty in six games had deserved to be a century after six sixes and seven limits, but he was hit in the hind leg and out of the lbw after 55 deliveries.
Just three balls earlier, Warner had slogged straight to Maxwell on the border. His 52 came from 40 balls.
The leg spinner Bishnoi, who conceded 28 goals, finished the race with three wickets and the medium-speed Arshdeep Singh with a pair.
Kings XI's Mayank Agarwal was overrun by his opening partner Lokesh Rahul in the second round and the team's challenge went downhill.
Pooran came in 31-2, hit a line on his first delivery and a six on his fifth. He crushed 18-year-old leg spinner Abdul Samad with 6-4-6-6-6-0 and reached the fastest fifty in this IPL with 17 balls.
But he saw teammates Maxwell at 5, Mandeep Singh at 6 and Mujeeb at 1.
Pooran's luck runs out against leg spinner Rashid Khan and gives up a big edge. He was the seventh man after entertaining 77 of 37 balls, including seven sixes and five limits.
Mohammed Shami was out of the running at the next ball for a duck and Khan finished the race with excellent numbers of 4-1-12-3.
