Ben Askren: ‘I let the world down’ with TKO loss to Jake Paul
ATLANTA - Ben Askren's boxing match with Jake Paul couldn't have been worse than for the former Bellator and ONE Championship defending champions.
Askren was disappointed, to say the least, on Saturday night after his fight ended in ruins when he suffered a TKO first-round loss to the YouTube star at the Triller Fight Club headliner at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
It was a one-sided fight when Paul landed a blow bomb which Askren dropped. He got up again but couldn't answer the referee intelligently and forced him to wave him off.
Askren attended a virtual media session after the competition and expressed its shame at the result.
"I haven't let the MMA community down, I have let the world down," Askren told reporters after the fight. "People hate Jake Paul and want me to make him miserable."
Jake Paul's ring video killing Ben Askren is insane
Askren, 36, came out of retirement to fight Paul after undergoing hip replacement surgery. A retired Olympic wrestler and two-time college national champion, Askren was never known for his punch during his MMA career.
It showed Saturday night against 24-year-old Paul, who increased his professional record to 3-0.
