Biden Administration Will Keep International Travel Restrictions In Place
The Biden administration will maintain current restrictions on international travelers, several outlets confirmed on Monday.
The USA currently prohibits most citizens of the 26 European Schengen countries, Great Britain, Ireland, India, Brazil, Iran, South Africa and China from entering the country. The Department of Homeland Security also announced last week that the US would keep its land borders with Canada and Mexico closed to non-essential travel.
Meanwhile, American citizens can travel freely to many of these countries, including Canada, Mexico, and European countries. Countries like Canada and Germany have higher vaccination rates than the US.
"Given the current situation with the Delta variant, the United States will maintain its existing travel restrictions at this point in time," a White House official told Reuters. "Driven by the Delta variant, cases here at home are increasing, especially among those who are not vaccinated, and are likely to continue to increase in the coming weeks."
The delta variant of the novel coronavirus is causing renewed outbreaks in parts of the United States, although the outbreaks are almost entirely concentrated in unvaccinated Americans. Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in comments on MSNBC's Squawk Box on Monday that the US may be two or three weeks away from the peak of the spread of the variant.
The Biden government is facing increasing pressure from stranded travelers, the travel industry, and members of the U.S. and foreign governments to lift restrictions.
