Biden calls the Republican Party ‘vastly diminished in numbers’ and its leadership ‘fractured’
During a press conference to mark the close of the NATO summit in Brussels on Monday, President Biden commented on party's politics by describing the Republican Party as "very much reduced", its leadership as "broken" and that the "Trump wing of the party the masses" be the party, but it makes up a significant minority of the American people. "
- Here at this meeting, and earlier at the G7, you have said several times that America is back on the allies side, but many of those allies are themselves quite shaken by what happened on January 6 and tried to overturn your elections . And they might still be alarmed by the continued power Donald Trump wields over the Republican Party and the rise of nationalist figures like him around the world. What do you think of these allies? What did you tell them at those meetings about how the next President of the United States can keep your promises?
JOE BIDEN: What I'm telling you is watch me. I mean, to be honest, I'm not saying anything. I am going out now.
Folks, like I said, I have no doubt that I mean what I say. And they believe that if I say so, I'll keep my commitments. I don't make promises to anyone that I don't believe there is an overwhelming probability that they will be kept.
I think we've got to a moment where ... I mean, let me put it this way. You may have had a different view, but I think a lot of people thought that my appearance in the G7 would not create excitement for American leadership and the state of America.
I would suggest it didn't turn out that way. I would suggest that the a-- the leaders I face in NATO and the G7 are leaders who know our recent history, know the character of the American people in general, and know where the huge center is public, not a Democratic Republican, but who we are. We are a decent, honorable nation. And I think they saw things happen that shocked them and surprised them about what could have happened, but I think they believe, like me, that the American people will not maintain such behavior.
And so - you know, I don't want to go into those statistics because, you know, that old phrase [INaudible] there are three kinds of lies, lies, damn lies and statistics. But I think it is fair to say that the Republican Party has declined sharply in numbers. The leadership of the Republican Party is broken.
And the Trump wing of the party is most of the party, but it is a significant minority of the American population. I think it's a shock and a surprise that what happened regarding the aftermath of President Trump's false populism has happened. And it's disappointing that so many of my Republican Senate colleagues I know better, such as B. are reluctant to investigate because they are afraid of being preferred.
But at the end of the day, we have seen times like this in American history where the nature of your party's politics at the moment has made us reluctant to risk re-election. I think this will pass. I don't mean over easily.
That is why it is so important that I am successful with my agenda, the agenda, whether it is about the vaccine, the economy, the infrastructure. It is important that we show that we can and will continue to make progress. And I think we can do that. Like I said, the evidence will be where it is, you know, where we are in six months, but I think you'll see that - God willing - we're going to make progress. And there will be an alliance of many Republicans, especially the younger Republicans who are rising up in the party.
