President Joe Biden said Monday his new administration would replace the U.S. government's fleet of around 650,000 vehicles with electric models to move towards clean energy.
While signing a new "Buy American" regulation, Biden said, "The federal government also has an enormous fleet of vehicles that we will be replacing with clean electric vehicles made by American workers here in America."
It is unclear when the electric vehicles will be launched and what models they will be. Reuters reported that replacing the fleet entirely could cost $ 20 billion or more. The White House did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
78-year-old Biden said the fleet replacement will help create a million new jobs in the American auto industry.
"This will be the largest mobilization of public investment and procurement, infrastructure and R&D since World War II," said Biden, who took office on January 20.

According to Biden, by current standards, at least half of a vehicle's parts must be made in the U.S. to be American.
"We're going to change that, too. The executive move I signed today requires not only that companies make more of their components in America, but that the value of those components add to our economy, as measured by things like a number of American jobs created and." supported. "
