Billie Eilish Had Her Marilyn Monroe Moment on the Met Gala Carpet

There is no doubt that Billie Eilish's Met Gala dress was inspired by American icon Marilyn Monroe. From the tip of her perfectly coiffed blonde head to the soles of her feet, Eilish exuded old Hollywood glamor on the September 13th carpet on the biggest fashion day of the year. She wore a voluminous gown - directly inspired by Monroe's 1951 Oscar gown - to take on her hosting duties at the event, and everything about the ensemble is literally flawless.
Adopting this beautifully sexy look felt right for Eilish, she said on the carpet during the live stream of Vogue. "It was time for it and I feel like I've grown so much in the past few years ... I was just scared and uncomfortable with myself and I feel like I'm finally [now]. It was time, "she said, adding that she * actually * sees her look as a vacation barbie - her favorite.

The juxtaposition of Marilyn Monroe and Barbie also makes sense for this year's event, the theme of which is In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. Eilish added her name to this list of American icons by taking inspiration from both, but her mission with Oscar de la Renta actually went beyond the Met Gala. She revealed in an Instagram post that her abandonment of working with the fashion house was due to her requesting them stop using fur. Forever.
"Thank you @oscardelarenta for designing this BEAUTIFUL dress and for bringing my ideas and visions to life. It was an honor for me to wear this dress knowing that oscar de la renta will be completely fur-free in the future !!!!" she wrote, adding that she was "thrilled" that the creatives listened to her request to stop using fur.
"I am honored to have been a catalyst and to be heard on this matter. I urge all designers to do the same."
"Billie had planned to go to the Met Gala for the first time before the pandemic," UK Vogue's style director Dena Giannini, who Eilish styled for the event, told Vogue. "She had always dreamed of wearing a real ball gown - a corset in particular, thanks to her love for Barbies growing up - but she thought it might be an acid green color or something like that."
Instead, Eilish wanted something softer and more mature, and that's how she and her team came up with this gorgeous Oscar de la Renta number. She certainly made a splash on her debut Met Gala Carpet and we hope her attendance turns into an annual thing as we dearly want to see what she brings up year after year.
