Brian Flores: No point in playing Tua Tagovailoa in mop-up duty
The Dolphins were leading by 26 points when they got the ball back with 4:09 Sunday remaining. It seemed like a perfect time for Tua Tagovailoa to make his NFL debut.
Unfortunately, Tagovailoa stayed on the bench and Ryan Fitzpatrick ended the game.
"I don't really think about it," said coach Brian Flores on Monday of Joe Schad from The Palm Beach Post.
Joe Burrow, number 1 overall, started the first day for the Bengals. Justin Herbert picked sixth place, a choice after the Dolphins took Tagovailoa, and won the starting job after Tyrod Taylor's lung injury opened the door in week two.
Tagovailoa has not seen the field yet.
"I don't think I know what we're going to do with it," said Flores. "If he gets a few snaps in a game I'm not sure. We play the ball all the time. If we want to give it to him and let him drop it, it might make some people happy, but I see in that no real reason. That's just my opinion. "
Several teams have used or had to use backup quarterbacks this season, including Dallas and Washington on Sunday. The Cowboys lost Dak Prescott to a gruesome ankle injury and Kyle Allen left with an arm injury.
It might take Fitzpatrick to be injured before Tagovailoa sees the field, but the dolphins want him to stay ready in an emergency.
"I think the quarterbacks are going down every week in this league," said Flores. "It's unhappy. You never want to see it. I feel terrible for Dak Prescott when I see this injury, so thoughts and prayers to him. I think he had an operation today. He's a great player. Much respect for him . You saw some people go under. The Washington quarterback - Kyle Allen - was hit in the head and then Alex Smith walked in. So you see this goes on across the league. Tua is our No. 2. He can come into play at any time. He's ready to go when his number is called. "
