British swimmer Hector Pardoe had to abandon the men's 10 km marathon swim at the Tokyo Summer Olympics after slapping an elbow in the face.
Until the injury in the last lap, the medal goal of the 20-year-olds was still within reach - but that changed quickly after the blow.
“I got an elbow in the eye - I'm not sure who it was - on the last lap. My glasses broke off and I couldn't see anything, ”he told Swimming World Magazine afterwards. "It swelled up and I didn't know how bad it was - it was all blurry."
"I couldn't see anything and thought my eye had fallen in the water and I went to the lifeguard and yelled 'my eye, my eye, is that okay?' “He explained according to the BBC.

Although he initially carried on, Pardoe eventually withdrew from the race.
"It's okay, I just have one big sting that they'll sort out in the village but it's bleeding all over the place," he added of his injury, according to the BBC.
The German Florian Wellbrock won the race, while the Hungarian Kristóf Rasovszky came second and the Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri took bronze.
Pardoe shared some photos of his injury after looking at his eye. "Elbow to eye at 8K, Google's kinked and sunk," he wrote on Instagram and found that the experience did not determine his time in Tokyo.
"But still smiling," he added.

In the end, the young athlete just regrets not being able to finish the race.
"I've never done 10km so it's really disappointing that it's at the Olympics, the biggest stage of them all," he said, according to Swimming World Magazine.
However, he hopes to try again in 2024. "I'm still young and I know that in Paris I can come back stronger and hopefully try to challenge the medals," he added.
