Bryson DeChambeau (62) ties career low with Shriners opener

In his first round of competition as a great champion, Bryson DeChambeau reminded everyone why he won the cup at Winged Foot last month.
DeChambeau hasn't lost a step in the two weeks since his six-shot romp at the US Open and came out on Thursday at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He played in the early wave and quickly moved to the top of the rankings with a 9-under-62 win. With that, his career on the tour was low and he was a shot better than his last lap at TPC Summerlin a year ago.
DeChambeau missed only two greens in regulation and putted five times for the eagle, hitting each of the three par-5s in two, and driving the green on the seventh holes at 381 yards and 314 yards. He led with a shot over Austin Cook and Harold Varner III after the early wave.

"It was a great day to play well," said DeChambeau. "There's mostly no wind out here, and you feel like you can bomb him anywhere and close wedges. And I've been lucky enough to do lots of putts to start my day."
DeChambeau led the morning players in strokes won from tee to green, but the relentless hobbyist was still not satisfied with his stellar opening round. He told reporters he planned to reach out to iron out some issues with his amazing driver, claiming he "thinned a lot of them off the tee" but managed to handle his mistakes while reaching 11 of 14 fairways.
"I'm very happy with the way I played today. I didn't do my best but I put it in the right places many times today. Lots of one-handed finishes, something I'll do." work on the range. "

DeChambeau won this event in 2018 and finished T-4 in his title defense last year. He continues to have an affinity with TPC Summerlin and is making the most of what he expects, his only start between the US Open and the Masters.
That 2018 triumph came amid three wins in five starts. And after splitting nine birdies and nine pars in his opener, DeChambeau remains optimistic that adding another trophy immediately after his win at the US Open cannot be ruled out.
"There are ways for (others) to play better than me if I do my best. I'm not going to take that off the equation," he said. "But what I'm going to say is that I play well and I feel like I have control of my golf swing and I putt well and do a lot of putts. I feel like I can and usually shoot low on many golf courses.
