Burke County deputies may have recovered Simon Powell's remains in local pond

Police officers investigating the 2016 disappearance of 63-year-old Simon Powell have found what they believe to be human remains in a pond in Burke County.
Weeks after a pond along Highway 56 was drained, officials from the Burke County Sheriff's Office have ended their search for the location.
"We were able to find human remains buried in the mud of the pond," Captain Jimmy Wylds said in the press release.

Search schedule, two men charged
Simon Powell from Augusta was last seen on June 1st, 2016. His burning truck was found the next day, according to previous Augusta Chronicle reports.
On July 13, investigators from the Burke County Sheriff's Office arrested Stacey Welch, 38, and charged her in connection with Powell's disappearance and murder.

Shortly after Welch's arrest, Burke County investigators began searching the pond to find Powell's remains.
On July 21, the U.S. Marshals Office 39-year-old Mitchell Lanell Lambert in Cummings, Georgia. Lambert, a native of Waynesboro, was charged with murder, kidnapping and armed robbery in connection with Powell's death.
