Is that all they could muster?
To say that GM got a big deal on the new C8 Corvette Z06 would be one of the biggest understatements. Almost every automotive publication stumbles upon itself to drool over the thing like it's the greatest sports car of all time. We like the flat plane-cranked V8 and a few other things about the C8 Z06, but the judges aren't sure how this thing will measure up overall. However, an information leak gives us a disappointing quarter mile performance that really surprises us.
Test your knowledge of the C2 Corvette here.
A user on the Corvette forum posted a picture of a poster that appears to show the C8 Z06's performance data. We already know the claimed 0-60 time of 2.6 seconds, but right below it is the quarter mile time of 10.6 seconds.
Some people will just get excited about watching Fast and Furious (which could be) too many times. Yeah, yeah, it's a 10-second car, a big deal. As the user who posted this picture notes, the C7 ZR1 also makes the quarter mile in 10.6 seconds. Just like us, he was hoping for at least a few tenths of a second faster, as GM sells the mid-engine platform as superior in every way.
Don't get us wrong, 10.6 seconds is impressive, but that still feels like a letdown. Is GM holding some back to make another product look better when it is released? Later there will also be a ZR1, as well as the much-rumored E-Ray hybrid C8, so is this an attempt not to overshadow one of them? We honestly don't know, but you wonder.
Another theory tossed around on the forum is that GM is deliberately underestimating performance, as BMW is known to do. It is possible, but we won't know until people have it in the real world and we see what it can do on the line.
