California Covid-19 Update: Governor Gavin Newsom Says, “Very Likely That We’re Going To Extend The Stay-At-Home Order”
On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that many areas of the state are expected to extend his three-week home stay order, which is due to expire December 30 in Southern California.
"Based on all of the data," said the governor, "it is very likely that we will extend the home stay order." Another part of the state where the order is likely to be extended is the San Joaquin Valley, which along with Southern California is 0% ICU busy and will be included in its surge plans which may add another 20% capacity, said Newsom. You can find the text of the CA Stay-at-Home order here.
The state reported 37,892 new daily cases and 83 new deaths on Monday, bringing the total to 22,676 deaths from the virus. The 7-day average of new cases is 43,901. Newsom indicated that the surge in new cases every day could possibly slow down a bit as the past two days have declined from all-time highs and are now below the 7-day average. However, this could also be the effect of data delays over the weekend.
The average number of daily deaths over the past 14 days is 233. The number on Monday is well below, but the governor again reminded that "these reporting periods often lag behind on the weekend".
The test positivity rate rose to 12% despite the state delivering a record number of nearly 400,000 tests on Sunday. This is bad news because it likely means that the number of infections is growing rapidly.
17,190 coronavirus patients have been admitted to the state and intensive care capacity increased from 2.1% on Friday to 2.5% on Monday. That's good news too.
One wild card in the deck that Newsom is playing with is the virus' potentially more infectious mutation that came to light over the weekend. State officials said none of the contaminants had been detected in California and plans were being made to keep them out.
