California Democrat in Congress tests positive for COVID-19
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California MP Salud Carbajal has confirmed the virus, tested positive for the coronavirus after contacting Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah who is among a growing number of lawmakers and White House staff, said his office.
The Santa Barbara Democrat said in a statement that he was looking for a test "after finding out I had been exposed to a person who tested positive for COVID-19." This first test was negative. However, a second test done on Tuesday was positive.
He said he had "mild symptoms".
"I hope this is a reminder of how easily this virus can spread," Carbajal said. "I followed all the precautions including wearing a mask, social distancing and hand washing and unfortunately I was still exposed."
While failing to identify the person in public statements, Mannal Haddad, a spokesman for the congressman, said in an email that he “interacted with Sen. Lee a few times last week and was asked to get a test after he did Sen. Lee was informed that it tested positive. "
Lee and Carbajal live next to each other in the same building, said Conn Carroll, a spokesman for Lee. He said Lee informed the Congressman of his diagnosis as soon as it happened.
Lee, who attended the White House Rose Garden announcement on Sept. 26 for President Donald Trump's candidate for the U.S. Supreme Court, announced last week that he tested positive for the coronavirus shortly after Trump said he had and the first lady would have tested positive.
