Since the start of the war in Ukraine, a number of foreign fighters, including US citizens, have entered the country to help fight Russian forces. Now, four months into the conflict, at least two American veterans who fought alongside the Ukrainian military have been captured - but the Kremlin claims international law regarding prisoners of war does not apply. Matthew Schmidt, international affairs program coordinator and associate professor of national security at the University of New Haven, explains the legality of US citizens fighting in foreign wars and the laws protecting captured soldiers.
