Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant news conference turns violent amid cheating accusations
Combat actions are littered with obviously staged conflict to increase interest.
That doesn't look like it.
Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant met in person at a press conference Tuesday to promote their November 6th unification battle for the super middleweight championship. It got violent.
The two exchanged a language unsafe for work as they stood in front of the cameras. Alvarez then nudged Plant, which staggered him. Plant responded with a left hook, which Alvarez dodged, and it was on. The couple exchanged blows before order was resumed.
Here's another angle.
The argument left Plant with a cut under his right eye.
Plant told TMZ that he didn't expect the cut to have to be postponed.
"Nothing that I have to have an operation for or anything like that," Plant said, according to TMZ. "It's just a small scratch."
"He's talking about my mother"
After the dust settled, Alvaraz revealed what triggered it. He told Showtimes Morning Kombat that he interpreted Plant, calling him a motherfucker, as a direct insult to his mother.
"He's talking about my mother," said Alvarez. "He said, 'You motherf *** er.' So you crossed a line right there. That's why I pushed him and he came back with a left hook. "
Alvarez added, "He is an insecure person."
Did the allegation of fraud fuel the fights?
Before Plant's perceived insult to Alvarez's mother, he threw devastating charges of fraud to the widely recognized pound-for-pound king.
Plant delivered an unfiltered Twitter rant against Alvarez after Oscar Valdez tested positive for a banned substance. Valdez and Alvarez both train under BBWA Coach of the Year 2019 Eddy Reynoso, and Alvarez has his own history of banned substances after testing positive for Clenbuterol in 2018. He blamed the positive test for eating rotten meat.
In response to Valdez's test, plan a multi-post Twitter rant on Alvarez on September 2nd. Be warned again. The language below is definitely not safe for work.
Plant's accusation seemed enough to jeopardize the much-anticipated November battle. But the fight continues, scheduled for November 6th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) will take his WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles against Plants (21-0, 12 KOs) IBF titles, with the winner walking away as the undisputed champion at 168 pounds .
That is, if they don't sort things out on the street beforehand.
