The World Cup creates tension and excitement around the world, and not even the most successful and talented athletes like Canelo Alvarez are immune to it.
The boxing legend sent a harsh, vague threatening message to Argentinian star Lionel Messi on Sunday, a day after Argentina beat Alvarez's Mexico 2-0. He wasn't upset about the game specifically, but about something that happened in the dressing room afterwards. He had seen a video showing Messi apparently kicking a Mexico shirt and wasn't happy with what he saw as a deliberate disregard for his country's kit.
"Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our shirt and our flag???" Alvarez tweeted, according to CNN.
"He better pray to god I don't find him!!" Alvarez added in another tweet. "Just as I respect Argentina, he must respect Mexico! I'm not talking about the country as a whole, just the bulls**t that Messi drew."
For those who haven't seen the video and only read Alvarez's tweets, the assumption is that Messi grabbed a Mexican shirt and purposely stomped everywhere, then dragged his foot around the room while cackling evilly. But once you watched the video, the scene wasn't quite as intense as you might have believed. Messi appeared to have accidentally touched the shirt with one of his feet when trying to remove his shoes and didn't seem to realize it was a Mexico shirt.
One of Messi's former teammates, Sergio Aguero, tweeted Alvarez to try and straighten things out.
"Mr. Canelo, don't look for excuses or problems, you certainly don't know anything about football and what happens in a dressing room," Aguero tweeted via CNN , he makes the move to remove his boot and accidentally hits it.”
Spanish soccer legend Cesc Fabregas also defended his former Barcelona team-mate, pointing out that "ALL shirts, including the ones we wear ourselves, fall on the floor and get washed afterwards":
