Carey Mulligan called out a Variety review which she believed implied she wasn't "hot enough" for her new movie, Promising Young Woman.
In the film, Mulligan plays a role in which she acts like she's drunk in bars and clubs and then devastates the men who take her back to their homes and try to take advantage of her.
In the review by critic Dennis Harvey, he wrote that Mulligan looked like someone with "bad resistance" and that the role would have been better suited for the film's producer, Margot Robbie.
"I was thinking, 'Really?'" Mulligan told the New York Times of the review. "For this film you are going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020? 'I just couldn't believe it."
UPDATE: Variety added the following editor's note to its Promising Young Woman review: "Variety sincerely apologizes to Carey Mulligan and deplores the insensitive language and allusion in our Promising Young Woman review that minimized her daring performance . "

Carey Mulligan called out a film critic who said she was "an odd choice" for her role as "femme fatale" in her new film, Promising Young Woman.
In his review of Variety, critic Dennis Harvey implied that Margot Robbie, the film's producer, would have been better suited to starring Cassandra.
"It's easy to imagine (perhaps too easily) that this role was once meant for [Robbie]," wrote Harvey. "While on this star Cassie wears her pickup bait gear like a bad move, even her long blonde hair seems to be on top. The flat American accent she delivers on her lower register also seems a bit meta, though it isn't it is very clear what the quote about this achievement means. "

On a New York Times profile, Mulligan brought up the Variety review when asked if she'd read any of the critics' attitudes.
"I read the Variety review because I'm a weak person," she told Kyle Buchanan.
"It felt like basically saying I wasn't hot enough to pull off this kind of trick," said Mulligan, who found she had a few more lines to recite from the review.
"It drove me so crazy," she continued. "I said, 'Really?' For this film you are going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020? 'I just couldn't believe it. "

In the acclaimed dark drama, Mulligan plays Cassandra, who threw away a career in medicine to devote her life to the chaos of men who fall prey to unsuspecting women.
She does this by acting drunk in bars and clubs. When men pick her up and take her to their homes, she shows that she is indeed sober and makes the guy wish he never saw her that night.
Harvey's attitude is a nasty irony, as the film's director, Emerald Fennell, intends to blow up all expectations of women in society.
"We no longer allow women to look normal or like a real person," Mulligan told the Times story. "Why does every woman ever on screen have to look like a supermodel? This has led to something where the expectation of onscreen beauty and perfection is completely out of control."
"Promising Young Woman" opens in theaters on December 25th.
