CDC Issues New Warning About COVID Risk

What's the new warning about COVID risk?

The CDC has added and defined "overweight" as a new risk factor that joins obesity. "Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) between 30 kg / m2 and <40 kg / m2 or being severely obese (BMI of 40 kg / m2 or more) increases the risk of developing serious illness from COVID-19." reports the CDC. "Metabolic changes associated with being overweight decrease the immune system's ability to fight disease, which likely plays a role when it comes to coronavirus outcomes," said Barry Popkin, professor of nutrition at UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health. Physical factors that sometimes occur with obesity, such as decreased lung capacity and sleep apnea, could also be important, he said, "according to Bloomberg." A review of 75 studies of Covid-19 and BMI data in August co-authored by Popkin , found a strong relationship between overweight and obese individuals and the risks of hospitalization and the need for intensive care treatment. The paper also raised questions about whether vaccines might be less effective in developing the coronavirus like the flu vaccine in these populations. "
