Chase Elliott continues to be NASCAR's king on the track. And Kyle Busch will not defend his title in the Cup series.
Elliott won his fourth straight street race on Sunday with his second straight win at Charlotte Roval. Busch, meanwhile, failed to advance to the third round of the playoffs and was eliminated from the fight for the title along with Austin Dillon, Clint Bowyer and Aric Almirola.
Elliott had the best car in the Roval again. A restart with 10 laps to go wasn't a problem as it drove away from everyone else and beat Joey Logano by almost three seconds.
Erik Jones was third, Kurt Busch fourth and Ryan Blaney fifth. Kyle Busch finished in the top 10 late in the race but had to search for fuel with two laps to go.
The win is the third of 2020 for Elliott. He won the Charlotte Oval in May and the Daytona Road Course in August. He will start the third round of the playoffs in fourth place.
Elliott is also the defending champion at Kansas Speedway. This is where the third round of the playoffs begins, before Texas and Martinsville before the four-driver final takes place in Phoenix on November 8th.
He is also the first driver to win four straight road races since Jeff Gordon won six straight races from 1997 to 2000.
Hello, rain tires
The race on Sunday was the first points race of the NASCAR Cup Series with rain tires. The race started with a wet track due to rain in the Charlotte area all morning and early afternoon. As the race went on, things dried up and the teams switched to slippery tires for dry conditions as the track started to get dry spots.
However, it did not stay completely dry. There were places in the infield area that were constantly wet and caused problems for numerous drivers.
Kyle Busch has 4 races to keep the series alive
Busch entered the Cup series full-time in 2005 and won two races in his rookie season. Since then he has won at least one race each season.
Busch has no wins in 2020. Will it be his first winless season? Busch showed considerable speed at times throughout the year, so that he was not completely wrong. He just wasn't very lucky.
Will his luck change in the last four races of the season? It will be fun if Busch wins in Phoenix while the Cup Series champion finishes second.
