There is a mystery in everyone.
We have seen many cars being pulled out of the murky depths of rivers, lakes and other bodies of water. It's always a spectacle because you never know exactly what you are going to see. Not only is it often difficult for divers to correctly identify a submerged vehicle, it is only when the car shows up and is fully pulled out that the condition becomes apparent.
That's not all that makes pulling a car out of the water fascinating. There is often a mystery about how the vehicle was submerged and how long it was there. For many, this combination of auto-spotting and forensic analysis is undeniably compelling.
Below is a list of some of the most interesting underwater car finds.
Mazda RX-7 FC

When divers on YouTube channel Adventures With Purpose started poking around the jetty in a river outside of Portland, they counted at least 6 classic cars in the gloomy depths (it later turned out to be several more). First, a Mazda RX-7 FC was pulled out, which had a crushed roof and windshield. While many thought the car should be restored, it was eventually disassembled and melted down to make commemorative coins.
1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1

The second car to emerge from the watery Adventures With Purpose cemetery in the Portland area was a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 that looked like a piece of Swiss cheese. On the first attempt to extract the classic muscle car, the engine tore loose and was recovered, revealing some nice long elbows that suggested it was in the possession of an enthusiast
1987 Chevrolet Camaro

This Camaro was stolen in July 1988 and was only recently pulled from the Spirit Reservoir in Fishers, Indiana. As you can clearly see in the photo, 32 years underwater wasn't good for this Chevy. It was found by two fishermen using a sonar device under a bridge near a marina. Unfortunately, the owner of the car died a few years ago, so he never found out what happened to his new car.
Chevrolet Silverado - We think

Sometimes the extraction process goes a little sideways for a car that has been underwater for a long time. Another time, the whole operation goes to hell, which also happened when Adventures With Purpose pulled another vehicle out of the river outside of Portland. Probably an old Chevy Silverado with the mutilated mass of twisted metal on the roof before it was turned over. Thanks to the pressure of water and mud, the rotting chassis and frame gave way, causing this carcass to be crushed as it is no longer good for anything else.
Mazda6

Normally, no enthusiast would be happy about a Mazda6 as it is a pretty common sedan. But when Adventures With Purpose pulled one out of a river in Milwaukie, Oregon to clean up the environment, things got exciting when a body was discovered in the front seat. The police were called and it appeared that the deceased was a man who had been missing since 2008.
1983 Pontiac Firebird

When a lake was drained for repairs outside of Atlanta, Georgia, a shocking discovery was made. A muddy object was discovered by several people that was apparently a car. Crews tore the 1983 Pontiac Firebird out of the mud and authorities discovered it was stolen in 1989. Filled to the roof with mud, the car was not even remotely salvable.
Jeep Liberty

No, the Jeep Liberty is nowhere near a collector's item, but the extraction of this particular specimen from a river in California highlights an interesting phenomenon. While pulling the jeep out of the water and up the steep river bank wasn't easy, the recovery team planned to return as several more SUVs were found submerged in the same area. The rotten thing about this Liberty is that it had new tires, a bike rack, and other goodies, as well as the keys still in the ignition, making it seem likely that it was either stolen or a case of insurance fraud.
