April left the show in May 2021 after a failed engagement to the ER doctor - but recently returned and they quickly rekindled their romance. After Ethan said to Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) in Episode 7 of this season, "It's a lot easier the second time around. It's like we've settled all major disputes." received a mysterious letter that turned out to be a wedding invitation.

In PEOPLE's exclusive first look photo, fans can see the happy couple in ecstasy as they exchange vows, with Ethan wearing a classic tuxedo and April wearing a dramatic, elegant wedding dress.
"April was raised Catholic, so a traditional church wedding was important to both her and her family," co-showrunner Andrew Schneider told PEOPLE. "April's white wedding dress reflects her love of tradition."
The dress itself "was designed by Tony Ward, a Lebanese-Italian designer billed as 'The Architect of Detail,'" the show's costume designer Susan Kaufmann told PEOPLE exclusively. "The dress is called 'Vanaria'."

Finding the perfect dress for the figure you love wasn't easy. "The details are particularly important in television because you spend most of your time in close-ups," explains Kaufmann.
"I shopped dresses with Yaya and we tried on about 15 dresses from three different stores," she continues. "After looking at photos and videos we settled on the last three, but it kept coming back to this dress. It had all the elements: it's classy yet glamorous, and the fabric and details are so beautiful and romantic!”

The decision to get April and Ethan back together and have her married began early in the season, according to Schneider and co-showrunner Diane Frolov.

"Both have developed professionally and emotionally in such a way that they can finally connect their lives," says Frolov. "When they met again earlier this season, April saw that Ethan was now more outspoken and less rigid; and Ethan realized that now he could be the man she needed.

After the wedding, the couple has big plans: "They set up a mobile clinic to jointly provide underserved neighborhoods in Chicago with first-class medical care," says Schneider.
He adds: "They stay in town!" - which means they may have ample opportunity to play at the Gaffney E.D. to stop by. in the future, although both have left the show.
"We felt that [the wedding] brought closure and a happy ending to the Ethan April love story," says Frolov. "It also felt like a compelling next chapter in his life as a doctor."
