BEIJING (AP) - A Chinese court on Friday sentenced Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu to 13 years in prison on charges including rape.
Beijing's Chaoyang District Court said Wu has 11 years and 6 months for a rape in 2020 and 1 year and 10 months for the "crime of gathering a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity" at an event in 2018 , in which he and others allegedly assaulted two people, to punish women who got them drunk.
The court said the three victims in the rape case were also drunk and could not consent.
It was said that a combined 13-year sentence had been agreed and that Wu would be deported immediately after serving his sentence.
"Based on the facts...the nature, circumstances and harmful consequences of the crime, the court made the above judgment," the court said in an online statement.
A Canadian diplomat was in court to hear the verdict, sources said.
Wu was also fined 600 million yuan ($83.7 million) for tax evasion by grossly understating his earnings from performing, advertising and other revenue streams.
The June trial of the 32-year-old former member of South Korean group EXO was held behind closed doors to protect the victims' privacy.
Wu has been detained since August 2021 while police conducted an investigation in response to online comments that he had "repeatedly lured young women into sex," according to a police statement at the time.
That year, a teenager accused him of having sex with her while she was drunk. Wu, known as Wu Yifan in Chinese, denied the allegation.
The teenager then said seven other women contacted her to say that Wu had seduced her with promises of jobs and other opportunities. She said some were under the age of 18.
Rape is punishable by three to ten years in prison, with harsher sentences, including death, being imposed in exceptional cases. The second charge Wu faced is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Wu grew up in Guangzhou, China and Vancouver, British Columbia.
