Chris Wallace Breaks Down How Jan. 6 Hearings Are Already Hurting Trump
When former Fox News host Chris Wallace appeared in CNN's primetime coverage of the committee's first Jan. 6 hearing earlier this month, he drew the ire of some viewers for expressing deep "skepticism" about their ability to change anyone's mind about Donald Trump.
But as the procedure begins to unfold, he may begin to change his attitude.
On Thursday morning, ahead of a session at which senior Justice Department officials are expected to testify, Wallace appeared on CNN to comment on a new 2024 poll showing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ranked Trump among the likely Republican Main voters in New Hampshire ousted.
In response to pollster Frank Luntz, who characterized the poll results as a sign that at least some conservative voters want Trump to "move on," Wallace said "that could quite possibly be the biggest impact" of the Jan. 6 hearings, "that it only adds to Trump fatigue.”
"Voters will not say, 'I changed my mind about what Donald Trump has done in the last four years, I would vote against him and not Joe Biden,'" he continued. "I think it could just be that people are like, 'Can we find Trumpism without having to deal with the baggage with all the drama of Donald Trump?'"
If those voters are "looking for a Trump alternative," Wallace added, then "DeSantis could be a pretty good choice."
And while Wallace doesn't think Trump has anything to worry about after a poll that saw him down two points two years before the election, he did point out that the "dirtiest word in Trump's lexicon" is "loser."
"Despite what he said, he was a loser to Joe Biden," Wallace said, referring to the 2020 election. "Now he could be a loser a second time." If Trump comes into the year with the real possibility 2024 is going to lose early primary states like New Hampshire, Wallace asked, "Will he have the guts?"
