Chris Wallace Stings Lara Trump Over First Family Going Maskless At The Debate
Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday pushed Lara Trump, an adviser to President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, to explain why her family refused to comply with mask requirements during the first presidential debate last month.
Members of the first family arrived wearing masks but removed them in the audience for the September 29 event at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. The venue required all guests to wear masks.
NBC reporter Marianna Sotomayor said she saw one of the clinic's doctors remind the Trumps to wear masks and even offer them extras. The doctor went away in frustration after none of them followed, Sotomayor reported.
Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his family wore masks.
"Did you think, Lara, that the rules that apply to everyone else in this hall don't apply to you?" Wallace, who moderated the debate, asked on Fox News Sunday.
"Well, of course we didn't think so!" Said Lara Trump. “I want to be very clear. No one from the Cleveland Clinic ever came and asked a member of our family to put on a mask. So this is completely wrong. "
Lara Trump insisted that the guests were socially distant and had all tested negative for COVID-19. The event took place just a few days after the “Superspreader” event in the rose garden on September 26th, during which non-socially distant participants did not wear masks. This was likely the cause of more than two dozen COVID-19 cases, including Donald and Melania Trump.
Wallace reminded his guest that "everyone in this hall had tested negative".
"You couldn't get into the hall without testing negative," he said. "And the fact is, the rules were, everyone but the president, the vice-president, and me should wear masks."
He also noted that it was the White House press pool report that mentioned the doctor's request.
"I'm not just doing this," he said, adding that there was a video of a Cleveland Clinic employee "walking up to someone in the Presidential Party and saying," Would you like masks? "And they were waved away."
During the debate, Donald Trump mocked Biden for his routine use of masks. He continued to disobey advice on wearing masks, even after testing positive for COVID-19 later that week.
