Donald Trump's critics are slamming in what they believe is a last-minute struggle by his administration to send federal dollars to polling blocs such as farmers and seniors to help the president claim a victory in the upcoming election.
As the President blows up conversational talks on Capitol Hill after a sudden break in negotiations with House Democrats, reports in recent weeks have painted a picture of his White House race aimed at sending federal aid to voters, which are of decisive importance for his re-election offer.
Just last month, Mr Trump hosted a rally in central Wisconsin announcing a new round of pandemic aid to farmers worth $ 13 billion.
The president has also sought to recognize initiatives that aid needy Americans a few weeks before the elections.
His administration has suddenly sent boxes of food aid to the Americans, which must contain a letter with Mr Trump's bold signature. This move has been described by Chris Lu, former White House Cabinet Secretary under President Barack Obama, as "yet another obvious attempt to buy votes".
Mr. Trump's recent attempts to distribute federal aid to key polling blocs ahead of the November vote were described as "uniquely aggressive" in a Washington Post report that included a statement from Bill Hoagland, senior vice president of the Bipartisan Policy Center said, "Obviously he's trying to buy the elections in a way that no one has done before, at least not in my life."
The White House has defended Mr. Trump's recent actions, with spokesman Judd Deere telling the newspaper that they had "absolutely nothing to do with politics."
He also said the actions "contain good guidelines that will advance President Trump's agenda for the forgotten men and women of this country".
The Department of Agriculture also defended the move to include President letters in food aid boxes delivered through the Food Box to Farmies Food Box program for Americans in Need at this unprecedented time. "
Mr Trump has taken further steps to send federal aid to election blocs identified by his campaign as critical to his election, including seniors. Last month, the president announced he would send $ 200 vouchers for seniors to help cut the cost of out-of-pocket prescription drugs.
And while the government said the president was prioritizing the health and economic stability of the country, those comments seemed to contradict Mr Trump's sudden decision to pull out of stimulus talks in recent days.
Global equity markets spun all week after Mr Trump posted a storm of tweets saying he was "ready" to sign a "Stand Alone Bill for Stimulus Checks ($ 1,200)".
The head of the Federal Reserve called for further relief earlier this year to recover from the unprecedented economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
An estimated 11 million people remain unemployed after the president declared a national emergency related to the novel virus in March and closed millions of businesses across the country.
Meanwhile, it was reported on Thursday that House Spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke for about 40 minutes discussing whether there is any chance that the Democrats will open the business negotiations with White House leaders and leaders the GOP could revive. The House Speaker is aiming for a comprehensive bill to address the economic downturn and has taken note of conflicting statements by several White House officials as to whether the President is also aiming for a comprehensive bill similar to the CARES bill passed 195 days ago.
