Confederate flags pop up in sky, on roads, outside Talladega
NASCAR recently banned the Confederate flag from its racetracks, but the organization has no control over the sky.
Before the planned GEICO 500 on Sunday at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, a small plane with a flag of the Confederate flag and a second banner with the words "DEFUND NASCAR" flew over the route.
Vehicles with the Confederate flag were parked outside. A social media post showed a video showing a stream of cars and trucks driving flags along Speedway Boulevard.
People along the street also waved the flag or cheered the caravan. The race was later postponed to Monday due to bad weather.
Earlier this month, NASCAR banned the Confederate flags from its races and events, partly due to a request from Bubba Wallace, the company's only black driver.
Steve O'Donnell, Executive Vice President of NASCAR, was not impressed by the sight of a plane carrying the Confederate flag and showed a picture of black-and-white hands folded on his Twitter feed on Sunday.
"You won't see a photo of a donkey hoisting a flag across the course here ... but you will see this ... Hope EVERYONE is enjoying the race today."
The race on Sunday should also have 5,000 fans as NASCAR continues to loosen the COVID 19 restrictions.
The logos on Denny Hamlin's car have also been changed to show the National Civil Rights Museum.
Sponsor FedEx donated $ 500,000 to support the museum's mission to record the history of civil rights in the United States. The museum and FedEx headquarters are both in Memphis, Tennessee, and Hamlin visited the museum on Thursday.
"Today you will see that my # 11 car does not have the traditional livery that you normally see," Hamlin said on Twitter. "FedEx and I would like to vote for the NCRM instead. I want to personally thank them for taking the time to educate me on so many issues."
