Congress Approves COVID-19 Relief Package That Includes $600 Stimulus Checks

Republican and Democratic Congress leaders finally reached an agreement on a long-awaited $ 900 billion aid package on Sunday after a month-long stalemate following the passage of the CARES bill in March.
According to the New York Times, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the deal in the Senate. "We can finally report what our nation has had to hear for a long time: more aid is on the way," he said.
Unfortunately, that "aid on the way" is peanuts compared to what millions of Americans struggling to pay rent or other basic needs when the economy collapses during the global pandemic. While the final bill is still in the works, the Times says it will pay $ 600 to skilled Americans, half of the $ 1,200 we received from the government more than six months ago at the start of the crisis.
The deal also extends unemployment benefits, which are due to expire next week, and is likely to include rental and food aid, money for schools and small businesses, and a revitalization of the paycheck protection program.
The news of the deal sparked angry reactions from many who view the $ 600 relief checks as a slap in the face of the countless workers struggling to keep their homes and survive the holiday season. People shared their criticism online and dragged the leaders of Congress for the measly offer.
Parliament could vote on this new stimulus package as early as Monday, which the Senate will sign shortly afterwards.
